Storm

04 January 2023

Storm clouds gathering at dusk over the Pacific as seen from Fairmount Heights in San Francisco looking west.

Head in the clouds.

I have no idea where this post will end up tonight. There’s a lot going on around here, from the continuing failure to vote in a Speaker of the House to the enormous storm we’re having in San Francisco right now to the unfolding drama at U.S. Soccer. I’m having a hard time trying to focus on even one thing.

So, I’ve decided to focus on all of them. Which means none of them. Although, we did stock up on supplies and ice and are constantly charging all our digital devices. It feels a lot like being in Florida for all those hurricanes. I should be pretty good at this. My worry, however, is that Florida is built for this type of weather. San Francisco — and California, in general — definitely is not.

For us, that means we need to take some of our Florida know-how (please, save your snark for a few more sentences) and apply it to this SF infrastructure. We have cleared blocks and blocks worth of storm grates on our dog walks. We’ve snaked the drains in the laundry room and garage. We came close to boarding up some windows. For now, the gusts are pretty severe but not too sustained. Trees in our neighborhood are down, though, and I’m pretty sure it’s just a matter of time before one of them takes out a power pole or two and we’ll be in the dark again.

We just got notified that schools are open tomorrow.  I’m not sure how sound a decision that is, but maybe that means the worst of this will be past us in the morning. Right now, however, the winds are howling and rains are lashing at our front windows. We’ll hopefully only have debris to deal with. I’ve already decided it’s probably not a great idea to bike in to work tomorrow. At the very least, I want to be here to monitor that potential flooding that tends to happen in our garage after really strong storms. Like the one we had Saturday. And are obviously having tonight. And will have later this week. I’m as worried about the flooding as I am about mudslides destroying one of our favorite dog parks.

In any case, I hope you are safe and dry, wherever you’re reading this from. And fingers crossed that all this worry and prep was all for naught by this time on Thursday.

See you tomorrow?
